TechCafe Happy Hour @BlueBoxGroup

Finally! The first TechCafe of 2012!

We have been planning this one for some time and can’t wait to see all the great people in the Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond tech community come out for Happy Hour. Last year was an awesome year for TechCafe events – so awesome we took a few months off from getting geeky with the best startups and technologists in the area – rest assured though we are back and planning a few awesome events. If you are interested in sponsoring or hosting one – let us know!

First up is one of our personal favorites. Blue Box Group! We have been watching this team grow for a while now and it has been a lot of fun, we first had an event with them when they moved to Seattle from Tacoma and now that they are growing and expanding (new east coast datacenter and new offices) we couldn’t wait to get into their new space and hear what all the excitement is about. I know they are hiring, I know they will have loads of free food & drinks, and I know that they will have swag…

Click Attend the Next Event for date, time, and registion information —>

With facts like that it is hard to avoid the obvious assumption that the event will be awesome! Plenty of cool hackers, startupers, founders, and people in the Seattle area tech community will be attending so if you want to get some free food/drinks, do some networking, and learn more about what is driving this awesome growth of a cool local startup – this is the place to be.

Co-sponsoring the event will be Colliers International (p.s. co-sponsored events are always better funded)!

See you there!

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays from TechCafe!

You may have thought we went away
I know it has been a month or two
Since we brought an event to you

Rest assured our next is in the works
And it will be full of startup quirks
We’ll bring you networking with your peers
No worries – we’re all a bit weird

So dirty shirt, or suit and tie
Drinks and Lunch are free and nigh

Happy Holidays from TechCafe – We are looking forward to seeing you at one of our events in the new year! In the meantime we hope that you stay focused on your products, find time for your family, and close the funding you need. If there is anything we can do to help you – please don’t hesitate to ask!

Sincerely,

The TechCafe Team

TechCafe @ColoInSeattle

After taking the end of the summer off, TechCafe is kicking into gear with a great event being put on by our friends over at WowRack Technologies. They have built an amazing colo down in South Seattle and are opening their doors to all of the Seattle Tech community to come check out their newest digs! There is a new website for the data center at ColoInSeattle (which is under the parent company of WowRack). This event will be taking a different spin as F5 will also be combining alongside Wow to put on a larger than life afternoon for the TechCafe community filled with free food, drinks, schwag, and private tours being held every 10 minutes from the networking lounge and lunch area to the data center for those that want to check it out.  Hang with some of your peers and hear about how WowRack has grown their infrastructure startup here in Seattle and built a top of the line datacenter to facilitate growth of the tech industry to host for some of the likes of Cheezburger, Buddytv, SEOMoz, and others.  You may have met the WowRack team at past TechCafe events (they have sponsored and attended a few in the past), or maybe you are even a customer of theirs. Either way, the attendance should be stellar at the event and stopping in for a drink would be worthwhile!
Join us Friday Oct 28th, we’ll start things off around noon and have the doors open till 3pm.  Come kick start your weekend with all of us!

Seattle Summer

As usual summer is full of vacations, spending time with family, and it seems it is always a good time around Seattle to hang out at Green Lake, Seward Park, or some other location by the water and learn something new. This summer to show our appreciation to the Seattle tech community for our Fourth year of TechCafe (YES 4 YEARS!)… We are partnering up with Udemy to try and create more Seattle entrepreneurs with successful businesses! We have a deal site of our own that is exclusive for this week only where we have convinced Udemy to offer you an exclusive 70% off of two of their courses.

The 1st, by Zed Shaw (the Yoda of Python), is “Learn Python the Hard Way”. The 2nd, by Bess Ho, is “Learn How to Build an iPhone or iPad App in Four Weeks.” Both courses are amazing because they don’t just teach you the theory behind coding, they actually force you to practice and write real apps. It’s what Zed calls learning “the hard way” and it works.

If you have an idea that you are trying to get off the ground but need some coding chops to start moving it forward – there is something to be said for taking four weeks to learn the skills to make it happen. Learn to Build iPhone and Web Apps in 4 Weeks – 70% off online courses with Udemy

This week only, we’ve convinced Udemy to bundle these courses together and give them away at a 70% discount. Grab both for $150 (retail value $500) at http://ude.my/l5WOuR

Just think – next summer we’ll be out at your new company HQ having a good time like we did last week out at the TechCafe Happy Hour @TeachStreet. We had a good time, met some great people, and of course learned to Bollywood Dance! (Geekwire has the exclusive video)

Next week (6/30 @4:30PM) we will be down in the SODO neighborhood w/3R Technology and a couple of their partners Moose Logic & Bandwidth Advisors co-sponsoring the event. Always a good sign that the catering will be awesome!! Click the “Attend the next event” link on the right hand side of the page to register…

DON’T FORGET: When you get there, make sure to park on the east side of the building facing the railroad tracks. A lot of mapping software puts you in the alley – but the RR track side of the building is where all the parking is along with the entrance to the space.

As always – we have more great events coming and if you want to sponsor or host let us know…

Zero Risk – 32000% Potential Return

I get asked all the time if my full time job is TechCafe. I always blush at being asked about my secret desire that a sponsor like MSFT or GOOG would come along and pick up my financial requirements so I could focus on building great events here in the Seattle area for the startup and tech community – the truth is, that will never happen (I have a full time job). I don’t know anyone that makes a living solely from running events of any kind (at least a living that would support the habits and lifestyle that my family is used to). SFBeta, Seattle 2.0, Hops and Chops, etc – none of these events are supporting a family of four.

So… how can anyone make a buck networking? I mean beyond the free food or the paid hours if you are a recruiter or service provider or the value in finding a job or finding the rockstar employee or partner you’ve been searching for and could only find at a TechCafe event? I am talking about networking in general and specifically ways to profit as a good networker without any previous planning, sponsorship selling, etc. I am talking about the new referral bonuses that two TechCafe alumns have recently announced. SEOMoz is offering US$12,000 to the highest quality networker out there and EnergySavvy is offering US$10,000 for the same thing!! That’s right – one task that you are doing anyway – networking – can lead to a little side cash of $32,000. We are talking what a Seattle Public School teacher earns in an entire year just for being a good networker – so it’s not chump change.

The details are pretty simple, think back through all of the networking events you have attended in the recent past. If you haven’t been to one recently, try to get into Seattle 2.0′s TNT event tonight. As you think through the events and the people you met – even briefly – think about whether they are a software engineer that would meet what these firms are looking for – if they don’t think about whether they might know a software engineer that does meet the requirements.

From there, it is pretty simple – make the recommendation (good or bad recommendation doesn’t really matter – sorry SEOMoz & EnergySavvy) – they are offering $32,000 in cash to throw some new names in front of them and they will gladly pay if the person works out. The risk – $0, the reward – $32,000, so networking offers a return of 32000% that is better than nearly any startup, penny stock, or real estate transaction will ever offer you. Granted the scale is limited, but the risk is zero – so putting a few names won’t hurt.

TechCafe is not getting paid to pump the Tech Hiring Bubble – but if you happen to get any portion of the $32,000 you definitely owe us some beers…

Oh – don’t forget to sign up for the next TechCafe Lunch @Hark on 3/4!!

Recap of TechCafe Lunch @HillandKnowlton w/Fitch

In case you missed the last event, it was over at Hill and Knowlton’s offices, and it was a huge hit!!

I know they aren’t a tech company and we didn’t even have them bring in a customer that is a tech company. What we did talk about was trends in the tech industry, what areas could be focused on, and if you are already focusing on a particular area – how to build a message that resonates with customer needs in your area. Joshua Reynolds, the Global Technology Practice Director over there gave us an hour of his time to get into the details and the result was great!

For those of you who have been skipping TechCafe events or if you haven’t attended/sponsored but have been thinking about it, we’re happy to share what you missed. The video is broken up into five pieces around 10min each so they are easier to consume. If you want the full deck – The Hill and Knowlton team have been gracious enough to let me share it with the TechCafe community as long as they provide feedback to Hill and Knowlton. If you want a copy, let me know Josh@techcafe.co and I’ll pass it along.

Company Profiles and Video

If you’ve been to a TechCafe in the recent past, you might have seen me diligently taking video… You might have seen some of the videos show up on TechFlash as well and thought it was great to see the content for later review or because you missed the event and wanted to hear the talk. The good folks at TechFlash will probably always continue to be faster at getting videos up on their site and report on the companies that we have hosting or speaking. They are really good at that! Here at the TechCafe site, people are always interested in what the history has been, who has presented, what the events were like, etc. So we will have more of a historical view of what has happened at the TechCafe events along with a focus on Company Profiles.

Now that we have the logo out of the way, the next big thing will be to get our Company Profiles built out. This will include a bit of a talk from the company and some details about the company (business they are in, details about the stage they are in, etc). A good portion of TechCafe events already include the talking bit – everyone who attends gets to learn from entrepreneurs who have approached a particular market or used a specific technology and the attendees get to ask questions etc. For non-attendees it is useful to at least hear and see the event after it occurred as the content is relevant to a broader audience.

Plus it’s great to know who the startups are in Seattle!!

Of course, we will have videos that are not included in the company profiles – such as the ones here, these were taken at TechCafe @TalentSpring earlier in the year – this is a four part series where Jonathan Sposato discusses his experiences taking a Seattle startup through being born to being sold to Google. Great series that’s worth watching!!

Back already!! TechCafe is putting on our second demo event!! Everyone really enjoyed seeing a few young startups last time, the startups really enjoyed the opportunity to pitch, and of course we loved putting the two groups together!!

So please join us for our (I don’t want to jinx it) Quarterly TechCafe Presents…
It is a demo event where we have carefully selected two startups from the community that are early enough in their lifecycle that paying to pitch or demo is outrageous – we are talking ramen eating, consulting on the side, (maybe some friends and family money), but really anything to make their passion happen startups!!
Like all of the TechCafe events of the past – this is a sponsored event, thanks to our friends at Fenwick & West LLP for hosting us and sponsoring!! If you want to support young startups by sponsoring a future TechCafe event please let us know.We will have three demos from young exciting startups from the area that are innovating in unique ways. These include:

Crowdmap – CrowdMap facilitates team collaboration by providing an iPad and iPhone interface for real-time mindmapping. Changes to your mind maps are automatically synced across devices and instantly synced among collaborators whether you’re working in the same room or from another time zone. It’s a simple and intuitive tool for sharing and organizing ideas from a lecture, a project or a brain-storming session. Check out CrowdMap for more details and screenshots.
Zebigo.com – Zebigo.com is a web-based dynamic ride share community which matches drivers and riders who are commuting the same way for work, going to events and for one-way trips.  Zebigo.com is an innovative new approach to ride share aimed to reduce carbon emissions, alleviate traffic congestion, build a stronger sense of community and help people earn or save money during their regular commute.
Each company will have 8 minutes to Demo and 2 minutes for Q&A before we move on. Of course there will be food and drinks on Fenwick’s great deck before and after the Demos!! If you are looking to participate in the NWEN’s First Look Forum – presenting or observing here first is a great step to prepare yourself! This event is a part of the Seattle Geek Week – if you are coming into town for Geek Week or are a Seattle-lite taking advantage of all the geekery – please sign-up with the Geek Week Attendee ticket!!

Of course if you are interested in sponsoring, speaking, or partnering with us in some way – let us know!!
