Software Engineer - Online Education Software Solution
at verticalmove in California-Silicon Valley/Peninsula
Our client is the leading social learning platform for higher education, now dominant in all of the top CS departments in the United States, including: Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Cornell, UIUC, Harvard, CMU, and Texas and used by over a hundred thousand students in hundreds of universities around the world, up from 4,000 users in two schools at the beginning of 2011.
The opportunity in front of our client is enormous. 200 million students worldwide are demanding some form of higher education, and a deep understanding of what they've learned and how they're connected will be increasingly valuable in a fluid, global labor market. Unprecedented educational experiments such as MITx and Stanford's Open Classroom are demonstrating that new models of learning can extend higher education to new constituencies.
Their product, prized by students and instructors for its elegant interface, is built on a solid foundation anchored by technologies such as MongoDB, Ruby and Rails, Java, JQuery, and the Amazon platform. Piazza is seeking top notch engineers to expand its product line beyond its roots as a Q&A platform.

Job Description
You'll be coding, close to the user, shipping every week, and , if that's your thing -- able to work throughout the stack: from the database all the way up to JQuery.
We don't have hard-and-fast rules about the person we're looking for. We're less interested in a particular set of technologies and more interested in hiring a great team member.
You will enhance, extend and create new and exciting functionality based on customer desires.
We are looking to create a platform that will be used by other developers.
While we look for full stack developers, we also have room for passionate front end and server engineers
Job Responsibilities
This is a 100% hands on role, but we also expect you to be part of the creative process as well.
Job Experience
We are looking for engineers that want to have a big impact on a social meaningful software solution that will be used by millions.
If Unit Testing is something you believe in, this is a huge plus for us.
if you have experience leading a team or project and aspire towards management, we welcome this as well.
We're looking for someone with around three to five years of commercial software development experience. We'd like you to have seen (and dealt with) the consequences of technical decisions that you made a few years earlier.
The ideal candidate will have worked at a high-volume consumer Internet company on a significant product, and have experience in rapid iteration of that product. Maintenance mode demands a different skill set, as does enterprise software. Our business is very close to the consumer.
The ideal candidate will have taken a leadership role on a big project.
You must believe in developer testing. We don't have a QA department here, and we push a lot of code. We need to be smart about how we test, since it's everyone's responsibility equally and we face the immediate consequences of bugs.
We use Java, Ruby, JavaScript, MongoDB, XUnit, Selenium, and the Atlassian tools, and we deploy on Amazon. Ideally, you should have deep experience in one of our core programming languages (Java would be the most helpful), but we believe a great engineer transcends technologies.
We hire a lot of talent fresh out of top schools. The ideal candidate will have had that experience him- or herself, with good grades in school and an interesting job afterwards.
