full time Staff Writer

at Tippr in Washington-Seattle

If you believe the pen is mightier than the sword, know that paper beats rock and scissors, and think erasers are for sissies, Tippr would love to meet you.

As one of the leading collective-buying deal sites, Tippr.com delivers steep discounts to subscribers in 13 US cities on the most exciting services, restaurants, salons, businesses and more in their ‘hood.

These deals don’t just write themselves, so we’re looking for a capable, full-time staff writer to join our offices in Seattle. We need someone with razor-sharp wit, impeccable grammar, and a great attitude to join our small, nimble team.

Specific job duties:

* Write colorful, persuasive copy describing merchant deals in each of our cities

  • Work directly with the Tippr sales team and editors to produce the deals
  • Write witty, compelling copy that will appear on our site, in our newsletters, and on our partner sites
  • Create entries for the Tippr.com blog and other Tippr social media sites
  • Help out where needed – we’re a startup and we all wear multiple hats at work!

The ideal candidate will posses:

* a 4-year degree in Communications, Marketing, or English, or equivalent experience

  • 1-3 years experience in a professional creative writing environment; web writing experience is a bonus
  • a passion for local, independent businesses
  • a deadline-driven mentality
  • a knowledge of web-writing best practices and AP Style Guide
  • the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • stellar multi-tasking skills
  • a great deal of flexibility (not the touch your toes kind)

If you’ve got a sense of humor and a killer work ethic, you may just be a good fit. To apply, please submit ALL of the following to be considered:

1. Resume
2. Cover Letter (let’s see some personality; stock cover letters go in the garbage) with salary requirements
3. The answers to the questionnaire below
4. A mock-up of a Tippr deal using the information below (DO NOT CONTACT THE MERCHANT)

Things to Remember When Writing a Tippr Deal

- Talk about how great the product or service is, NOT just how great the deal is.
– We call people who get our emails and purchase our deals “Tippsters.”
– Feel free to use “Hell” but all other four letter words are out of the question.
– When referring to Tippr, use the 3rd person.

Things to Avoid When Writing a Tippr Deal

- Don’t spell out a joke with parenthesis (do you get it!?) or italics. If you need these tools to help people understand a joke, chances are it’s not funny.
– Avoid obscure pop culture references that are obvious to you, but that some people may not understand.
– Don’t be salesy. Avoid sentences that start with “Sick and tired of …” or “Got X problem?” If you can picture your copy as narration for an infomercial, that’s a bad sign.
– Don’t pigeonhole or make fun of a group of people for the sake of a deal (Republicans, hipsters, redheads).
– Pick a theme for your promotion and stick with it. Don’t lace a series of ideas throughout the deal.
