In an earlier post we talked about the launch of Google’s new product, Latitude. Today it was reported that Latitude picked up over a million users in its first week. Vic Gundotra, Google’s VP of Engineering declared 2008 “the mobile Internet took off.” The success of Latitude provides further legitimacy to the LBS industry. Google’s trusted brand will help to allay fears about privacy and will make the consumption of other location based service products not only acceptable, but desirable amongst the masses – not just early adopters. With continuing improvements and the release of exciting new handsets, 2009 looks to be a promising year.
