Put It all on the Line

Some very smart people have said that I should post my vision for nPost on the blog.  Should I lay it all on the line in a blog post?  What do you think?

Post your vision and follow up with monthly updates.

  2. Be visionary!

Sometimes, less is more. If you set the expectations too high you can blow them. Under promise, over deliver. What would the benefit of listing everything you ever wanted to do? If you need help flushing out ideas, then maybe. If you’re just playing a resource/timeline/priority game then maybe its not in your interest (unless you’re trying to land some biz dev type of deals?

I say whatever you do, don’t pigeon hole yourself. Maybe expound more upon the problems nPost is looking to solve in the greater community and job market, and not necessarily the details of how.

I agree with Eric and Aviel… Discuss your problem space. Start the conversation. Then implement as you see fit. As you begin to implement, explain on your blog how the implementation meets the needs of the space previously defined. Your “vision” should be revealed by how well you execute on it.

Actually, I’d been away from npost.com for a little while (sorry!) but checked it out over SSW2 and was wondering what had happened to it. I thought it was a busted redirect to the blog until I realized it was just different now. We’d all love to hear your plans to take over the world, just dont spill the magic sauce.

If we were playing buzz-word bingo, this set of comments may win….

That said, I’d be interested less in you “vision” and more in your focus or you value statement. Tell me where you are focusing today — and let everyone speculate on what that may lead to. What you want to be in the future (vision) is one of those things that can be problematic if then someone goes back and tries to hold you to some vision you set out three years previously. However, I think it would be great to know what the focus and value add you see NPost providing to the community. But I agree with Aviel, Eric & Josh — no need to let folks under the hood too much.

Have you been reading one of those catchy books like ‘Crossing the Chasm’ or something…

  8. Thanks everyone for the great comments. A number of people have also commented to me directly, whether in person or via Twitter. I am definitely formulating a plan and look forward to sharing it with everyone!
