Staying Focused

How many times have you or another early stage entrepreneur gotten 80-90% of the way towards launching a new company?  I have heard of this affecting mostly developers, as they want to move on to the latest and greatest challenge.  My opinion is that this is not something that only mires developers, but in fact gets everyone.

We all want to focus on a new company, product or release, but after working on it for for a few weeks, months or even longer we all want to move on.  It most certainly has to do with boredom, wanting to launch and achieve something, even if it means starting something new.

This happens to everyone, no matter their role at a startup.  Interestingly, I think it may be more prevalent at smaller startups, as the individuals in the startup don’t have whole teams to keep them focused and on task.

When an individual or part of a small team it is vital to keep completely focused on the task at hand.  Easier said than done, I know.  If you find your focus drifting ask your self the following questions:

  1. Why am I losing my drive to launch?
  2. Is this because I feel that the idea is no longer valid?
  3. Am I frustrated with the time it is taking?
  4. Do I need help in launching? Whether for skills or simple help in getting launched.

If you answered yes to any of these, I would suggest that you take a long hard look at what you plan on doing.  If you can’t buckle down and get it done, then you need another strategy, whatever that may be.  Many a great idea haven’t happened due to the founder not have the determination to launch.

If you did answer yes to 2-3 then start looking for help immediately.  A good idea is a good idea and you should do everything in your power to get it launched.  If you answered yes to 1, then maybe it is time to move on.

We experienced the same issue with your startup job board.  We were able to identify that we needed an additional person to bring on board, which we did.  What is holding you back?  In the end, it is up to you.  Get cracking!
